Computers use IP addresses in order to connect to
the internet and to find other computers or servers. An IP address
looks like this: 174.120.233.36.
Under most circumstances, hosting
accounts are issued a shared IP address. Which means that many web
sites under the same hosting plan or server will share the same IP
address. Only a web
browser can determine exactly which site a visitor is requesting based
on the www address entered into the url search bar within the browser.
A dedicated IP, however is a completely unique address and no other web
sites share it. With a dedicated IP address, entering the IP address
into the url browser search will take the visitor to the web page
requested.
Generally speaking, a shared IP address is appropriate for most web
site owners. Nothing will either be gained or lost from having a shared
IP address.
However, a dedicated IP address may be necessary for those site owners
who require a private SSL Certificate to secure the web site. That is,
sites that deal in e-commerce, banking or any site that requires
personal or financial information from customers that is transmitted
over the the internet. Those types of sites will need a dedicated IP
address to make their sites safe.
We offer dedicated IP addresses to compliment SSL security for those
site owners who need one in order to properly secure their sites from
third parties seeking to intercept sensitive data.
