Bandwidth refers to the
amount of data and the speed in which that data is transmitted over the
internet. Millions of computers are connected to the internet through
networks established by Internet Service Providers (ISP).
Bandwidth can be thought of as site traffic. Each time a web site is
accessed, the downloading of the web page itself, the text, pictures,
files and anything else associated with a single web page must be
accessed and transmitted over the internet to arrive and be viewed
within a web browser. That downloading and transfer of data can be
measured and kept track of. That is bandwidth.
The process of sending and receiving information over the internet
requires a form of energy. That energy is bandwidth. Bandwidth is like
a highway and is the conduit that carries information across the
internet. The more bandwidth that is available the more that can be
carried for longer periods of time without disruption. The larger a
particular web page is, the more bandwidth that is required to download
and transmit it across the internet to arrive at the end user's web
browser.
There is only so much bandwidth available for an ISP to service all of
its customers. As an internet surfer, you have no doubt noted that at
times, particular web sites seem to take longer to load than others.
That phenomenon is typically due to bandwidth. There are many factors
that affect bandwidth performance such as the number of visitors trying
to access a single site at the same time and the size of a web site -
or how much must be downloaded and transmitted. ISP's have a finite
amount of bandwidth as bandwidth is a representation of public internet
connectivity. When there is heavy or unusual load on a particular web
server that is connected to the internet, speed and performance may
decrease.
In web hosting, to overcome the possibility of web site performance
deprecation, alloting a certain amount of monthly bandwidth to each
individual account is the preferred method. This ensures every account
of an exact amount of internet data processing without interference
from other sites competing for the same bandwidth.
Many web hosts greatly oversell bandwidth with fingers crossed. That
is, they group too many sites together on a single server all sharing
the same bandwidth. The bet they make is that the sites on the server
will not use more bandwidth all combined than the server is physically
capable of delivering to maintain a speedy and effective hosting
environment.
You should always exercise caution when dealing with a hosting company
offering unlimited bandwidth. Chances are, your account will be grouped
with others in an 'unlimited plan'. That system works well as long as
the group uses less bandwidth than is available. If not, the
performance of your site can be affected.
How Much Bandwidth
is Necessary?
That depends. It depends on the number of visitors your site receives
and how much data must transmitted each time a visitor requests your
sites through a web browser. It all adds up. Our bandwidth allotment
schemes provide for web site growth at your own pace. Bandwidth is
allotted on a monthly basis -or how much bandwidth can be used within a
hosting plan per month. Additional bandwidth can easily be added to any
account as needed or an account can be upgraded.
